I have discussed the lines in the Lord's Prayer: (1)"Holy be your name"; (2)"Your kingdom come"; (3) "Give us this day our daily bread.".And now, I will talk about (4) Forgive us our sins. What does the Lord's Prayer say about forgiveness of sin: Matthew 6:12 and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us. This is what our Savior taught us. That it is not enough that we pray for forgiveness. We must forgive those who sin against us. This is well said in the following verses: Matthew 6:14 If you forgive those who sin against you, your heavenly Father will forgive you. Matthew 6:15 But if you refuse to forgive others, your Father will not forgive your sins. This looks like a one-to-one correspondence between forgiving and being forgiven. When Peter asked our Savior how many times he has to forgive his brother, the answer was: Matthew 18:22 That was how deeply soaked into sin Peter was. However, it is not certain if our Savior is talking specifically only about Peter. We do not know if what our Savior said was also applicable to us. So, as a matter of personal rule, we must be as forgiving as we can in our daily life. It is better to forgive 70 times or more to be on the safe side. Better yet, just forgive, forgive and forgive. |
