Accepting Good And Evil |
Many people wonder why should God punish Adam and Eve for knowing good and evil? The premise that they did not know good and evil is wrong, they already knew good and evil. Let's review the sequence of events in the story. God gave them all the good things: the image of God in them that gave them their life; the air they breath and the fruits to eat to sustain their life:
Genesis 2:16
And the LORD Yahuwah God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of
the garden thou mayest freely eat:
Then Yahuwah told Adam about the evil of death:
Genesis 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.
It is clear that they already knew good and evil before they ate the forbidden fruit. It is also clear that in Genesis 2:16, Yahuwah expected them to accept the good fruits made available to them for food to maintain life, and reject the evil fruit that would bring them death. In other words, they may accept good but not evil.
The Serpent came and told Eve that she would not really die eating the forbidden fruit:
Genesis 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
In Genesis 2:17, the Hebrew word "da-at" was used which means just knowing good and evil. In Genesis 3:5, the Hebrew word "yada" which means knowing, admit, or accept. Here is the tricky part. "Eating" means accepting despite the instruection not to. Therefore, eating the fruit of the knowlege of good and evil means accepting both. So, be it. They accepted good by eating the good fruits, but they also accepted evil that went with eating the forbidden fruit.
They could have retained their immortality if they did not accept the evil of death.
That is exactaly what we do now. We accept the life when we were conceived and born, but also accept death by saying it is part of life.
